RefreshFinasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

This is a sample of participants from the population-based cohort study of finasteride-naïve men with prostate cancer treated at UHS.
Data for this study are based on data from the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT).
The PCPT is a major clinical trial (CT) program (the National Cancer Institute) that enrolled 5366 men with prostate cancer who were treated with daily oral finasteride. Participants received a daily oral dose of finasteride 1 mg or 5 mg. The median age of the participants was 63 years.
Participants were randomized to receive a daily dose of 1 mg of finasteride or 5 mg of finasteride per day for five years. The median time to first treatment with finasteride was 2 years.
Prostate biopsies were collected from participants at each study visit and were performed at baseline, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 months. The primary outcome measure of interest was the change from baseline to 12 months. Generic Proscar is a prescription medication used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) in men. It works by blocking the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes hair loss. By reducing DHT levels, Proscar can prevent further hair loss and promote regrowth. It is available in tablet form and is taken orally, usually once a day. The medication is taken once daily, with or without food.
